Student-Athlete Leadership Training

Coaches, teachers and administrators often ask athletes to be leaders, but the athletes are rarely told how to do this. Mundelein High School Athletic Department has created SALT: Student-Athlete Leadership Training. The mission is to develop the leadership skills needed by our student-athletes in order for them to serve as effective leaders of their team.

The program is open to all potential team captains. These athletes have been recommended by the coaching staff of the sport(s) they participate in. To provide a broad representation of the school’s athletes, student-athletes are chosen from each sport. The group meets periodically throughout the school year and meets at times that generally do not conflict with other activities the students may be involved with.

The SALT curriculum is designed with the whole student in mind – emphasis is on the emotional, social and intellectual development of the student-athlete. The students participate in a broad variety of experiences and hands-on activities. The SALT curriculum challenges the students to take risks and work outside their comfort zone.

We strive to create a nurturing and safe class atmosphere to allow this development to take place. While much of the curriculum revolves around topics and concerns in athletics, it also highlights the process of learning as well as the outcome. Overall, SALT prepares students to be life-long learners and leaders.
