Mundelein Elementary District 75 and Mundelein High School District 120 will host a free screening of the movie, Being Enye, on Monday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the MHS Auditorium. (An enye is the symbol over an “n” in Spanish.) Denise Soler Cox, a Latina filmmaker and cultural storyteller, shines light on the Enye Experience through her documentary featuring first person narratives from first generation American-born Latinos, also known as Enyes.
Following the screening of the film a panel discussion will take place with local Enyes to include students, teachers and members of the community. Babysitting will be available for parents of young children; however, middle school age students and older are encouraged to see the movie.
According to Stacey Gorman, MHS director of curriculum and instruction, there are three main outcomes expected from the screening: to explore the challenges first generation LatinXs feel as they constantly navigate between trying to embrace the dominant cultural identity of the United States and the cultural identity of being a LatinX (those born in the US with at least one parent from a Spanish-speaking country);to discuss the discrimination faced by first generation LatinXs; and to build pride in what it means to be LatinX.
