Mundelein Theatre will present Metamorphoses, a show filled with gorgeous imagery, powerful moments and breathtaking storytelling, from Oct. 27-29.
Originally written and directed by Mary Zimmerman, a founding member of the Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago, the show is a creative theatricalization of Roman poet Ovid’s masterwork of both well-known and rarely told myths of transformation and creation.
The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 27, 28 and 29 and at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, October 28. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. The matinee performance on Friday is only $2 for MHS students.
The play will be performed with the audience sitting onstage in a 200-seat thrust configuration, so purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mundeleintheatre.org. Tickets will also be on sale at the door, 30 minutes prior to each performance. The play deals with mature themes and is not recommended for children.
“The play is a fascinating mix of stories that juxtapose the ancient and the contemporary,” said Director Jonathan Meier. “Each of our actors play six or seven different characters throughout the telling of these stories, so the collaboration, character development and ensemble work is off the charts.”
The show is traditionally performed in a pool of water on the stage, but this production features several thousand plastic balls as a substitute for water.
“I think the audience will really enjoy watching the company navigate the ball pit,” Meier said. “It gives an interesting energy to the entire play.”
Seniors in the ensemble of Metamorphoses are Madeline Demuth, Will Gonzalez, and Jacob Hutter. Juniors in the cast are Stephanie Aquino, Jake Canela, Taylor Gates, Julia Myrant, Leandro Ocampo, Sarah Page, and Zoë Van Krey. The Stage Manager is Marissa St. Clair, and the Assistant Directors are Morgan Jacobson and Gianna Horcher.
