    Mundelein High School's infrastructure is aging beyond repair

    Mundelein High School was the pride of the Mundelein area when it opened in 1961. Its 680-square-foot classrooms had seating for 20 desks. The building had a cutting-edge boiler system, glass block windows in the hallway, and an auditorium for band, orchestra, and theater programs. In the 63 years since it opened, these areas, along with the competition gym and the kitchen and cafeteria, have seen little change.

But this classic comedy began its life on the Broadway stage in 1948, and will be coming to the Mundelein Theatre stage this fall. Performances will be held on Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30 p.m. There is also a performance on Friday, Oct. 18 at 3:45 p.m.

    County Clerk provides voting education to Transition Center participants

    Dozens of young adults from several Transition Centers throughout Lake County tried out voting machines for the first time on Wednesday, thanks to the Lake County Clerk’s Office and the District 120 Transition Center. Approximately 74 transition participants (of programs that help them transition from high school to adulthood) registered to vote, filled out ballots and placed “I Voted” stickers on their coats.

The program received 150 applications, but only 40 high school students from Lake were chosen.     MHS adds more Town Hall Meetings on Referendum

    Mundelein High School District 120 has added another Town Hall meeting to its slate of events informing the public about its upcoming $175 million building referendum. Besides two Town Hall meetings on Thursday nights March 8 and March 16, the District has added a Saturday morning event on March 11, allowing an opportunity for those who cannot attend a week night event. The Thursday meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday morning meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m.

    Substitute soloist wins top award for MHS

    In the world of high school show choir competition, sometimes things don’t go as expected. In the case of Mundelein High School junior Alex Torralba Rivera, sometimes they go better than expected. The MHS performance at the Great River Invitational in Davenport, IA on Feb. 18 was especially memorable for Alex. He not only agreed to fill in when his choir’s regular soloist, senior Will Gonzalez, became ill, but he offered to substitute on a second solo.

    District 120 staff receive two honors in Those Who Excel Awards

    School District 120 will be honored twice when the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recognizes winners of its Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year awards. Mundelein High School Instructional Aide Maggie Kirkman won a Meritorious Service Award in the category of Educational Support Personnel and the District 120 Transition Center team won a Special Recognition Award in the team category.

    MHS students place at FBLA conference event

    Mundelein High School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) students had a number of top-ten finishers during the 2023 Northern Area Conference at the College of Lake County in January. Area schools and students participated in more than 70 events. MHS students either took objective tests or gave live presentations on a wide variety of topics. Students who score the top in their event can advance to the State Competition held in April.

Tyler Bell, Naomi Cabachuela and Mariela Ramos were selected for HPREP (Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program), an educational program for Chicagoland high school students from underrepresented communities.​

    WWII veteran receives Bronze Star Medal at MHS ceremony

    Pfc. Edward Bedno, U.S. Army, sat in a wheelchair in front of more than 100 veterans on Friday morning, waiting to finally receive his Bronze Star Medal. He earned the honor 77 years ago. He didn’t mind waiting a few more minutes. The Mundelein resident earned the medal, along with a Purple Heart, after being wounded in combat in Okinawa, Japan on May 20, 1945.
