MHS art students win $1.5 million in scholarships

Mundelein Art students will compete for top prizes at the 2023 Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) hosted by Art ConnectedED on Sunday, April 23 at the Bridgeport Art Center. Students are selected across eight different categories or from submitted scholarship portfolios.

MHS first school in state to pilot national Human Trafficking Prevention program

Human trafficking can occur in all areas and affect all populations. While Mundelein is no different in this way than any other community, there is one factor that will soon set it apart. Mundelein High School students are the first in the state to participate in a nationwide pilot program designed to prevent human trafficking.

MHS Special Olympics basketball team preps for state tourney

Mundelein High School has had its share of wrestlers, swimmers and gymnasts competing at the state level. But, for the first time in school history, the MHS Special Olympics basketball team is going to state. The team, coached by Mundelein High School Transition Center teacher Eric Billittier and Krissy Pawlicki, is scheduled to play at 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 10 at the Horton Field house on the Illinois State University campus.

MHS adds more Town Hall Meetings on Referendum

Mundelein High School District 120 has added another Town Hall meeting to its slate of events informing the public about its upcoming $175 million building referendum. Besides two Town Hall meetings on Thursday nights March 8 and March 16, the District has added a Saturday morning event on March 11, allowing an opportunity for those who cannot attend a week night event. The Thursday meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday morning meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Substitute soloist wins top award for MHS

In the world of high school show choir competition, sometimes things don’t go as expected. In the case of Mundelein High School junior Alex Torralba Rivera, sometimes they go better than expected. The MHS performance at the Great River Invitational in Davenport, IA on Feb. 18 was especially memorable for Alex. He not only agreed to fill in when his choir’s regular soloist, senior Will Gonzalez, became ill, but he offered to substitute on a second solo.

District 120 staff receive two honors in Those Who Excel Awards

School District 120 will be honored twice when the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recognizes winners of its Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year awards. Mundelein High School Instructional Aide Maggie Kirkman won a Meritorious Service Award in the category of Educational Support Personnel and the District 120 Transition Center team won a Special Recognition Award in the team category.

MHS students place at FBLA conference event

Mundelein High School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) students had a number of top-ten finishers during the 2023 Northern Area Conference at the College of Lake County in January. Area schools and students participated in more than 70 events. MHS students either took objective tests or gave live presentations on a wide variety of topics. Students who score the top in their event can advance to the State Competition held in April.

Mundelein High School show choirs, Sound and Reverb dominated their first competition of the season, as Reverb won Grand Champion of the Prep Division and Sound was named overall Grand Champion at the Burlington Chocolate City Showcase in January.

Three seniors attend Northwestern health care program

Three MHS seniors are spending six weekends at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago to attend an immersive health care program taught by medical students. Tyler Bell, Naomi Cabachuela and Mariela Ramos were selected for HPREP (Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program), an educational program for Chicagoland high school students from underrepresented communities.

Historical drama takes the stage at Mundelein High School

Mundelein Theatre will bring the story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan to the stage in their production of The Miracle Worker on February 2-4. This story of a blind and deaf girl and the teacher who was able to reach her is one of the most well-known and inspirational stories of the twentieth century.
