While that sign may be meant for her students, Aguirre will be living those words during the next two years as the new facilitator of an affinity group at MHS designed to support educators of color.

MHS Soccer's Dayton named Assistant Coach of the Year

Much of what MHS Assistant Soccer Coach Mike Dayton does for his team occurs behind the scenes. His work helping students with academics, college recruitment and life skills in general won’t make any headlines in the sports pages. But his work is noticed by his colleagues and now it has been recognized by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA).

The future of Mundelein Theatre will be on display on the Mundelein High School stage in the upcoming production of “Noses Off”, by Don Zolidis. Known as the New Faces production, the cast is made up primarily of freshman and sophomore students. The show will be performed on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 14-16 at 7:30 pm, as well as 2 pm show on Saturday.

Mundelein High School's infrastructure is aging beyond repair

Mundelein High School was the pride of the Mundelein area when it opened in 1961. Its 680-square-foot classrooms had seating for 20 desks. The building had a cutting-edge boiler system, glass block windows in the hallway, and an auditorium for band, orchestra, and theater programs. In the 63 years since it opened, these areas, along with the competition gym and the kitchen and cafeteria, have seen little change.

Classic 1930's Comedy Opens Mundelein Theatre Season

“The Philadelphia Story” was a wildly successful film in 1940. It was also made into a popular movie musical in 1956 (High Society). But this classic comedy began its life on the Broadway stage in 1948, and will be coming to the Mundelein Theatre stage this fall. Performances will be held on Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 17, 18, and 19 at 7:30 p.m. There is also a performance on Friday, Oct. 18 at 3:45 p.m.

MHS to host referendum building tour Oct. 10

Mundelein High School will host a third building tour on Thursday, Oct. 10 to inform the community about its upcoming referendum. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Mundelein High School, 1350 W. Hawley Street. The $149.5 million referendum would fund a plan designed to replace aging infrastructure, upgrade instructional spaces, enhance career and technical education spaces, make health, safety and security improvements, and address overcrowding issues.

The District will also host an informational webinar regarding the referendum on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 17.

MHS students among state champs in MS Office exam

Four Mundelein High School students placed as state champions this spring in the Microsoft Office Specialist Exam from Certiport, a provider of performance-based IT certification exams. Michael Berman placed second, Isaiah Alaban placed seventh, Cody Sliozis placed ninth and Zachary Nicklas placed tenth in the state. The exam is an industry-recognized certification program that validates skills in Microsoft Office applications.

There will also be a 2 p.m. show on Saturday. Set in Damon Runyan’s mythical New York City in 1950, the show features Frank Loesser’s brassy, immortal score, with the classic “Luck Be a Lady,” as well as “Adelaide’s Lament” and “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

County Clerk provides voting education to Transition Center participants

Dozens of young adults from several Transition Centers throughout Lake County tried out voting machines for the first time on Wednesday, thanks to the Lake County Clerk’s Office and the District 120 Transition Center. Approximately 74 transition participants (of programs that help them transition from high school to adulthood) registered to vote, filled out ballots and placed “I Voted” stickers on their coats.

District 120 to wait until November ballot for next referendum

Ten Mundelein High School students are receiving national recognition from their PSAT/NMSQT testing. MHS will honor the students with an Academic Awards Breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 16. In addition to the National Merit Scholarship, academic honors are awarded to underrepresented students through the College Board’s national recognition programs. Juniors are eligible if they score in the top 10 percent on the PSAT/NMSQT by state in the eligible exam periods.

MHS students accepted to Northwestern Medical health care program

Five Mundelein High School juniors were accepted into the selective Northwestern Medicine GCM Grosvenor Program. The program received 150 applications, but only 40 high school students from Lake were chosen. Carlos Armenta, Samantha Alvarez, Keshav Chandramouli, Nayary Huizar, Vanessa Marcos will join the program which is designed to give ambitious students an inside look at the vast array of careers in medicine.

New Faces presents a play within a play at Mundelein Theatre

Known as the New Faces production, the cast is made up of freshman and sophomore students. The show will be performed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m., as well as 3:45 p.m. on Friday, November 10. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

College Board honors MHS for its Advanced Placement programs

Mundelein Theatre Presents Lost Girl

Mundelein Theatre will present the story of Peter Pan character Wendy Darling after she returns from Neverland and has to grow up herself. The fall play, Lost Girl, written by Kimberly Belflower, will be performed on Oct. 26, 27 and 28 at Mundelein High School. The play, written in 2016, answers the question of what became of Wendy Darling. Long after returning from Neverland, she decides that she must find Peter in order to reclaim her kiss and move on with her life.

The Town Hall meetings, which will run from 6:30-8 p.m., will offer a tour of the school and present a funding proposal that has been downsized from April’s failed building bond referendum.

Boys State candidate Animesh Bijawat wins $2,000 scholarship

During the week-long mock government program held at Eastern Illinois University, Bijawat was elected City Party Chairman, County Party Chairman, and leader of the Federalist Party.

School Board presents inaugural Award of Excellence in Education

Citing the success of the Mundelein High School Theatre Department, in particular the production of the spring musical “In The Heights,” the District 120 Board of Education honored MHS Theatre Director Jonathan Meier on Aug. 14 with its inaugural “Award of Excellence in Education.” Board Member Tom Ouimet presented Meier the award during an Opening Day program for the MHS staff in the high school auditorium. Meier accepted the award, but credited his MHS Theatre Department.

Sen. Johnson donates to MHS Girls State program

Mundelein Summer Theatre is a Family Affair

The Mundelein Summer Theatre production of The Lion in Winter will be a family affair with MHS Theatre Director Jonathan Meier playing the role of King Henry II and his wife, Jill Reznick Meier, playing the role of the queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The remainder of the cast is comprised of alumni and current students of Mundelein Theatre. The play is being directed by Timothy Ortmann, recently the Fine Arts Department Chair at Niles North High School.

MHS mourns former teacher, coach

Don Miller, one of the original staff members of Mundelein High School, passed away on Thursday, June 22 at his home in Wauconda. He was 91. Miller, considered by many as a legend at MHS, was a teacher, guidance counselor and coach for several sports during his 43 years at the school.

MHS Incubator team advances as national finalist

The winning team at the MHS Honors Business Incubator Pitch Night is now a finalist in the INCubatoredu National Pitch competition. The team, made up of five graduating seniors from Mundelein High School, was selected as one of the top 5 teams in the country by INCubatoredu. But it was for good reason: he was a finalist among thousands from across the state competing in the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards. The payoff was huge: On Monday evening, he walked away with the grand prize: Best Performer in an Actor Role.

MHS Special Olympics basketball team preps for state tourney

Mundelein High School has had its share of wrestlers, swimmers and gymnasts competing at the state level. But, for the first time in school history, the MHS Special Olympics basketball team is going to state. The team, coached by Mundelein High School Transition Center teacher Eric Billittier and Krissy Pawlicki, is scheduled to play at 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Friday, March 10 at the Horton Field house on the Illinois State University campus.

MHS adds more Town Hall Meetings on Referendum

Mundelein High School District 120 has added another Town Hall meeting to its slate of events informing the public about its upcoming $175 million building referendum. Besides two Town Hall meetings on Thursday nights March 8 and March 16, the District has added a Saturday morning event on March 11, allowing an opportunity for those who cannot attend a week night event. The Thursday meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday morning meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m.

Substitute soloist wins top award for MHS

In the world of high school show choir competition, sometimes things don’t go as expected. In the case of Mundelein High School junior Alex Torralba Rivera, sometimes they go better than expected. The MHS performance at the Great River Invitational in Davenport, IA on Feb. 18 was especially memorable for Alex. He not only agreed to fill in when his choir’s regular soloist, senior Will Gonzalez, became ill, but he offered to substitute on a second solo.

District 120 staff receive two honors in Those Who Excel Awards

Mundelein High School Instructional Aide Maggie Kirkman won a Meritorious Service Award in the category of Educational Support Personnel and the District 120 Transition Center team won a Special Recognition Award in the team category.

MHS students place at FBLA conference event

Mundelein High School FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) students had a number of top-ten finishers during the 2023 Northern Area Conference at the College of Lake County in January. Area schools and students participated in more than 70 events. MHS students either took objective tests or gave live presentations on a wide variety of topics. Students who score the top in their event can advance to the State Competition held in April.

WWII veteran receives Bronze Star Medal at MHS ceremony

Pfc. Edward Bedno, U.S. Army, sat in a wheelchair in front of more than 100 veterans on Friday morning, waiting to finally receive his Bronze Star Medal. He earned the honor 77 years ago. He didn’t mind waiting a few more minutes. The Mundelein resident earned the medal, along with a Purple Heart, after being wounded in combat in Okinawa, Japan on May 20, 1945.
