Nationally known research scientist, Dr. Mark Stoyer, will spend part of the day Tuesday, Aug. 16, touring the recently-opened building addition and STEM Labs at Mundelein High School. He will also speak with three chemistry and physics classes during his time at MHS.

Stoyer, senior staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory [LLNL] in Livermore, CA, has a broad range of research interests including heavy element chemistry and physics, laser fusion research, nuclear structure research, nuclear reaction research, radioactive beam generation and utilization, fission studies and radiochemical diagnostic development. He is co-discoverer of six chemical elements [113-118] and co-namer of Element 114 [flerovium] and Element 116 [livermorium].

Stoyer holds a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Purdue University and a PhD in nuclear chemistry from the University of California-Berkeley. He held postdoctoral research positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory [LLNL] and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory [LBL] until he joined the LLNL staff in 1995.

Having traveled to Russia more than 15 times while collaborating with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Stoyer also visited Tobolsk, Siberia, the birthplace of Dimitri Mendeleyev, organizer of the periodic table.

“This will be a great opportunity for students considering science careers to speak with a recognized professional in the field of scientific research,” said MHS Principal Anthony Kroll.  “They should enjoy the connection to the brand new science labs they are experiencing and appreciate a success story from a career research scientist,” he said.
