Administration of Medication

When a student’s licensed health care provider and parent(s)/guardian(s) believe that it is necessary for the student to take a medication during school hours or school-related activities, the parent/guardian must request that the school dispense the medication to the child and otherwise follow the district’s procedures on dispensing medication. If it is determined that medication must be given to a student at school, the procedure below will be followed:

  • All prescription and over-the-counter medication will be administered by a school nurse. Students are not allowed to carry medications, with the following exceptions:
  • No School District employee shall administer to any student, or supervise a student’s self-administration of, any prescription or non-prescription medication until a completed and signed School Medication Authorization Form is submitted by the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • All medications including an asthma inhaler, EpiPen, or medications for diabetes require an annually updated medical order on the School Medication Authorization Form.
  • MHS nurses will dispose of any medications that are not picked up at the end of the school year
