While many area schools are just starting their new school year, Mundelein High School is already in its fourth week of school. And Homecoming is just around the corner! In addition to the annual Homecoming activities, this year it will include a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new 3-story building addition that just opened.
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Several school officials, local dignitaries, representatives from Legat Architects and IHC Builders along with a state and US representative will offer brief remarks. Student-lead tours of the new facilities will continue through 11 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
“We specifically chose Homecoming Weekend for this event because many alumni will be in the area and are interested in seeing the striking addition to their alma mater,” said Kevin Myers, superintendent.
Construction began in the spring of 2015 for the $23.8 million facility, funded in part by a state grant set aside for classroom building. The new addition houses STEM labs and courses, Project Lead the Way instruction, a Business Incubator Lab, world languages courses, areas for multiple teaching stations and break-out rooms, a balcony and areas for outdoor activities. The addition bisects what was a large courtyard in the middle of the original section of the building. Several smaller courtyards are now part of that landscape for student use.
“Opening this new addition with a special focus on STEM and Project Lead the Way instruction is a dream come true for Mundelein High School,” said Principal Anthony Kroll. “We are now able to offer our students many opportunities to explore specialized subject areas and career possibilities while they are still in high school. This is a proud moment for District 120,” he concluded.
The Ceremony will take place on the lawn in front of the northeast entrance to the new addition.
