Mundelein High School senior, Mayela Correa, has received the President’s Volunteer Service Award which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Officials of MHS nominated Correa for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

Correa has volunteered at Santa Maria del Popolo Church since she was in fifth grade, spending about three hours each Saturday working in various capacities. She is also a volunteer at several food pantries in the area.

At MHS, Correa works with the Recycling Club, collecting and sorting school-wide recyclables and she volunteers in the Best Buddies program. In her first two years of high school she was a member of the girls basketball and the girls track teams.

Correa has been accepted into the DePaul University Honors Program where she hopes to major in biological sciences and then enter medical school. Her career goal is to become a pediatric oncologist.

“On behalf of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, we are proud to present this prestigious award,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO, Prudential Financial, who sponsor the program.
