Hussain Razvi, a sophomore in Mundelein High School’s Project Lead the Way (PLTW)-Honors Principles of Engineering course, was recognized in Samsung’s recent “Solve for Tomorrow” competition. Thanks to Razvi, Mundelein High School was one of only two high schools from Illinois to be recognized in this nationwide contest designed to boost interest and proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The challenge was for public school teachers and students in grades 6-12 to show how STEM can be applied to help improve their communities.

Hussain proposed an alternative methodology for checking symptoms of COVID-19. Using research from SARS-2, he identified measurements that are strong indicators of respiratory-related diseases like COVID-19. The proposal used Arduino-based sensors, making it extremely cost effective. His plan also included monitoring capability using data shared across multiple institutions to provide feedback and guidance on current and future public health mitigations.

“After competing in the Mundelein Mayor’s Challenge last year, I was inspired to find other events,” Hussain explained.

As an honorable mention entry, he received a Samsung Note20 5G cellphone and a compatible UV sanitizing charger with a total retail value of over $1000.

“Hussain is also an active member of our Robotics Club and has done a lot during this season despite the pandemic,” said Manny Aldana, Project Lead the Way instructor. “While his dad thanked me for mentoring Hussain, I would like to thank everyone for supporting programs like PLTW and robotics which create inspiration and opportunities for our students to thrive in the STEM field,” Aldana concluded.
