The Mayor’s Sixth Annual STEM Challenge will take place Sunday, March 17 from noon to 3:30 pm at Mundelein High School. The sign-up deadline is March 1. Interested students may sign up with their math teachers or submit their names to Cynthia Peart at cpeart@mundelein.org. There will be NO signups on the day of the event. Four volunteers are also needed from each school. Duties would include proctoring and possibly grading. Submit names to the above email also by March 1
The math and engineering competitions will run simultaneously. Math will be an individual exam for 50 minutes with cash scholarships. The divisions are middle school, junior varsity and varsity. Inter-school competition prizes will be awarded for overall grand winners for each division. A traveling trophy also will be awarded to the school using the top five scores from that school. Students who are grand winners for their division are not eligible to place in their division for school awards. A name plate will be added to each school’s high score plaque.
The engineering competition will be a team challenge. Students will use various materials to creatively solve a problem. The competition will last one hour and 45 minutes and will result in a traveling trophy to winning teams. Three to five students will comprise each team in varsity [high school] and middle school. Cash prize will be split among the winning team members.
All participants should arrive by 12 noon to register and obtain packets. The Mayor will open the competition at 12:30 pm with the competitions beginning immediately after that. Awards will be presented at 3 pm.
