Associate Professor Brian J. Logan of the VanderCook College of Music faculty joined MHS band directors Andy Sturgeon and Jerald Shelato Jan. 31 for in-depth work with MHS student musicians. Logan was able to work with students in Symphonic Band, Honors Symphonic Winds, Honors Wind Ensemble and Concert Band.

Logan was director of bands at Wheeling High School from 1991-2016. In his final year there Logan's Wind Ensemble performed at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, their fourth appearance, and won the Class AAA Division at the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival. Jazz Band 1 performed as the Honor Band at the Northshore Jazz Festival. At Jazz in the Meadows Wheeling's Jazz Band won Class AAA for the tenth consecutive year and Grand Champion for the third consecutive year. The Wheeling Jazz Combo performed at the Midwest Clinic, which was the third Wheeling performance at Midwest in six years. The "Wildcat" Marching Band won three First Place Awards along with two Grand Champion Titles. Twenty-three Wheeling band students earned spots in the ILEA District VII Concert and Jazz Bands.

The MHS band directors enjoy working with Logan and their students. “. We have already had him out throughout the year to work with our marching band and jazz band,” Sturgeon explained.

Logan is the Jazz Activities Chair for the National Band Association and in 2016 was awarded the District 214 Friend of the Arts Award, the John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award from Quinlan and Fabish Music, and the Illinois Band Master of the Year Award from Phi Beta Mu.
